Let’s Look Into Some Snoring Solutions
Snoring is something some of us do and something which most of us talk about, albeit embarrassingly. Snoring might seem harmless but it isn’t. Doctors have said time and again that chronic snoring is a sure indication that something is wrong with your respiratory system.
Don’t sleep on your back, sleep on your side. Keep your weight down at all times. Don’t smoke before sleeping. Avoid alcohol before bedtime. But it remains the same: as soon as you’re off to dreamland, everybody else knows it because your snoring is at a decibel level equal to that of a power chainsaw being launched into action.
Not All Solutions Are Effective
There are so many snoring solutions offered on the market today: pliable nasal breathing aids, mouthpieces, anti-snoring pillows, nasal strips, even oral supplements.
Big bucks spell big business and in advertising snoring solutions, you cannot help but notice that the old adage “one man’s meat may be another man’s poison” is somehow true, because if it works for the next Joe or Jane, sadly, it doesn’t mean it will work for you. The solution is only deemed effective if it cures the malady. Or at least reduces its symptoms or offers temporary relief.

Not All Snoring is the Same
People snore differently, just as they sleep in different positions. Pinpoint the cause of your snoring and you’re one step closer to finding a solution to your predicament. When your airway narrows, the air you breathe cannot go through the passageway between your nose and your lungs. This happens when the soft tissues in your tongue and throat vibrate and create snoring sounds.
Adjust your sleeping position (on your side instead of on your back), remind yourself that smoking and alcohol consumption are two no-nos before bedtime. Although stress and fatigue may be contributory to the tendency to snore, they could probably make you snore from time to time but chronic or regular snoring is not the same and should be dealt with accordingly.
Factoring in Common Causes
Remember that there are common causes which you should factor in considering snoring solutions such as age (in middle age and beyond, the muscle tone in your throat decreases and therefore its passageway tends to get narrower); gender (men have narrower airways than women); heredity (you get a narrow throat, adenoids or an abnormally soft palate from your parents); history of nasal problems (a blocked airway makes air inhalation difficult); and lifestyle (incessant alcohol consumption and smoking, as well as intake of medications like muscle relaxants).
Cessation of breathing during sleep, insomnia, morning headaches, shortness of breath upon awakening, sleepiness during the day, these are all observed instances of a serious medical condition known as sleep apnea.
Sleep apnea causes the person sleeping to wake up just to breathe again because when one has this condition, breathing stops from anywhere to ten seconds to a few minutes. This is obviously dangerous and may be indicative of a more serious medical condition which snoring solutions might not be able to relieve or treat. If you think your snoring has turned into sleep apnea, go see your doctor immediately; doing so might just save your life.
